A day in the city

A little more about me and my family -- we moved to New York from Austin, Texas last year. It wasn't something we had planned, but the economy and other factors meant that it was the best option at the time.

Whenever we told someone we were moving to New York, they assumed we would be living in or near New York City. But it's a big state -- much bigger than I thought! We live out in the sticks, actually. If not for Tony's job, there is no reason on earth why we would choose to live here (just being honest!)

When we committed to moving, we assured ourselves we would go into the city often. But I was pregnant and taking care of a toddler, so that didn't happen. Then Olivia came along, and it seemed like even less of an option. Finally, last month, we were able to go for a day. My parents were visiting, and they generously watched Jackson and Olivia. We ate at Blossom, walked along the High Line, and saw a Miranda July sculpture exhibit in Union Square. Aside from almost getting heat stroke, it was really fun. But we weren't sure we'd ever be able to go back with our babies in tow. How would we carry all their stuff with us onto the trains? How could we ride in a cab with two babies and no carseats?

But yesterday, Tony woke up and said "Let's go to the city," so we did. We opted to drive rather than mess with the train. It was really easy (Mapquest is our friend) and we went to the Guggenheim Museum, Central Park, and ate lunch at a not-vegan-but-vegan-friendly place called Hummus Kitchen. I had a falafel wrap that was really tasty. I didn't take any pictures of the food. It was a small, crowded restaurant and the waitstaff were always around, so I felt weird about busting out my camera. Does this happen to anyone else? I do like seeing pictures of other bloggers' restaurant meals, I dunno why I feel shy about it myself.

Anyway, I guess this isn't a food-centric post at all, but it's my life! I don't spend every day in the kitchen (just most of them)and it felt really good to get out and do something different. Hope you had a fun weekend, too!

Here are my little ones in Central Park. I was trying to get Jackson to stand still for a nice picture, but he wasn't having it!

  2. Soooo envious. I am obsessed with NYC. I've been there 4 times, and I always look forward to my next visit. I can't believe you don't go more often...however, this is how people are more responsible than I am. You realize it's probably too much to drag the kids and their belongings on the train, etc. I'd do it without thinking, then wonder what I was thinking. Glad you had fun! I don't think we ever ate at Blossom, but I did love Cafe Blossom, the other one.

I used to be embarrassed about taking pics in restaurants - and I still am if it's a dark, quiet, nice place (unless I guess I just use my phone) - but I think I'm used to it by now. I think I'm actually only a little hesitant when there are other people, besides my family, with me.
