Masala Yum

Jackson had a rough soccer game this week. Literally rough, as the other team was not showing good sportsmanship, probably thanks to their aggressive, yell-y coach. A tough loss for the boys, but a good lesson in how not to act on the field.

After the game, Tony and I split up and he took Jackson to Mighty Fine, where Jackson had earned a free meal thanks to perfect attendance at school.  Olivia and I went to Masala Wok, her choice. (She had missed just one day of school due to upset tummy.) It all worked out nicely and we were both able to spend some one-on-one time with our kiddos.

We started with garlic naan.

Olivia ordered noodles with veggies. Girl loves her noodles.

I had the sag paneer with tofu, so rich and delicious.

Hope you have a happy Halloween! Tree pose skeleton is spooky!

Kung Pow!

With school, homework, and soccer consuming our days, home cooking is not happening every evening. But we don't want to go to a restaurant with a long wait time, either. We got thangs to do. That is why I love Masala Wok. They are always amazingly speedy, and the food is so good.

Spring rolls to start.

Kung pao veggies with tofu, delicious.

So we still have time for video game downtime with friends. Skylanders, ready to battle!

Ghost Mall

Today we ventured to Highland Mall so Tony could shop for sneakers. Highland Mall is an Austin oddity and undeniably sad. Just six or seven years ago, we shopped there regularly. But then the recession happened and most of the stores went out. However, the mall remains open for a small handful of shops...mostly sneaker stores, with the occasional Hot Topic or cell phone dealer.

The food court is still semi-operational, making me wonder...who eats there?

The only way I can describe how it feels wandering around this half-abandoned mall is this...imagine you survived a zombie apocalypse by holing up inside the mall. And now it's one year later.

Defunct Auntie Anne's.

In the midst of desolation, a Clash reference.

Desperate for signs of human life, we headed to Masala Wok (not in the mall) for lunch. We've eaten there before but I forgot to review it. I like all their vegetarian options and how quickly they bring your food. We started with spring rolls.

I had the spicy basil veggies and tofu over brown rice. Plenty of leftovers to take home!
